I love youth ministry!
Last night at theReign i started off my sermon with this question (now remember as a youth pastor, i speak to 12-25yr olds): who here tonight loves sex? Just as i though, every group has one, a guy raised his hand proudly. I followed by this statement “I Love Sex!”… as u can imagine (especially coming from an unmarried pastor) this took them by surprise…
Now before some of you religious ones start freaking out, let me explain… I continued by saying that God created sex, and He loves sex. Therefore, i love what God creates and love what He loves. It is possible to love something before you experience it.
After getting all their attention (all you gotta do is say sex in church, and everyone is paying attention), i began to start teaching our new series “Protecting your Purity” with part 1 on Sex Drive.
Everyone has a sex drive, it doesn’t matter if you are 12 or 82. God put that desire inside of you, and its ok to admit it, but you must understand how to shift your thinking about it.
Why do you have a sex drive? In 2 Sam 24:24 david says “I will never offer to my God something that cost me Nothing.” We all know that true value never comes from the price of something, but rather from sacrifice, hard work, victory…
I value the gold medals i earned in state track competition when in high school so much because i will never forget how may years i worked so hard to achieve it. At the same time someone can go out and buy the same medal i have, but will never understand the value the same way i do.
In the same way, your purity is like a trophy. The greater the Battle the more meaningful your purity. Your sex drive is in you now because God wants your sex to be that much more valuable/meaningful when you do it right and save it for one person in the confines of marriage.
It is not the trophy that gives the game value, it is the game the determines the value of the trophy.
and i love how one pastor puts it, “Love isn’t love until it cost you something to give it away”
Anyone can give away something expensive, but only those who understand sacrifice can give away something valuable. Your purity is a treasure hidden in your life, protect it!
